Exclusive Video: Smith & Wesson’s Unique SW1911 Engraved Pistol

Gun owners have been dressing up their firearms for as long as they have existed. They have gunsmiths alter the grips or stocks, or change the finish. Why? Because firearms — especially handguns — can be personal and serve as pieces of art while still being very functional.

Of course, one of the most striking additions to any firearm is engraving. Many a custom pistol has been engraved with specific artwork or simple scrollwork. In many cases, the firearm is nothing more than a palette for a skilled engraver’s work. This kind of work can be amazing, but it comes at a cost — often more than the firearm itself — leaving most buyers out of the process.

Well, Smith & Wesson is offering its SW1911 Engraved with machine engraving, and it looks pretty good while being affordable.

Precision engraving using computerized machines helps keep costs and weight times down. S&W is now offering machine-engraved revolvers and handguns, including the SW1911 Engraved I got my hands on for testing.

Chambered in .45 ACP, this model includes the usual SW1911 features, including a checkered frontstrap, a grooved slide top and unique, fish-scale-like cocking serrations. It also has scrollwork on the slide and frame and comes in a very nice wooden presentation case.
