Most humidors feature Spanish cedar lining, which helps regulate humidity, repels tobacco beetles, and enhances the aging process of cigars. While you might picture a traditional humidor, several versions exist. Classic desktop humidors are ideal for personal collections, holding between 25 and 100 cigars. These often feature high-quality wood construction along with built-in hygrometers and humidification systems, making them as beautiful as they are functional.

A Humidor for Everyone

Since they are made of wood, they are porous and can dry out your cigars if unseasoned. Seasoning your humidor involves a simple process. First, clean the interior surface thoroughly with a damp cloth using distilled water. Then, introduce a humidification pack to start the process. I recommend using 72% Boveda packs, as they’re inexpensive and easy to find. Once sealed, let the humidor sit for about three days. After three days, check the humidity. If it’s at the desired level, switch to a 69% Boveda pack and add your cigars.

The total time required to season your humidor depends on its size. You can track the seasoning progress using a hygrometer, which measures humidity inside the humidor. Many desktop and larger models come with built-in hygrometers, but you can also acquire standalone devices that connect to your phone. Having a hygrometer is essential for managing the humidity and condition of your cigars.

Now that you have your humidor ready, maintaining it is key. Monitor the humidity levels closely to prevent drying out. If you use disposable packs, purchase extras so a replacement is always available. For refillable devices, keep distilled water nearby.
