When the AK was first developed, the earliest synthetic materials started appearing in firearms designs. These early examples were too weak to be used for something that required a lot of durability, like a stock. So, the AK began with a wooden stock, either solid wood or, for more strength and greater durability in the elements, laminated wood. American manufacturers make new and very attractive AK stocks in these original materials. But Kalashnikov fans can also opt to modernize their AKs with the latest and most ergonomic polymer stocks—fixed, folding or collapsible—as well as new grips and handguards for completely personalized rifles.
