Cortés is best known for leading the conquest of the Aztec Empire. During this time, there were moments of relatively peaceful and cooperative relations between him and the Aztecs. These cases of diplomacy with Aztec Emperor Montezuma II and his people most often came during the early stages of the expedition. This expedition began in February 1519.

Cortés made use of interpreters, notably La Malinche – a Nahua woman from the Mexican Gulf Coast. She became renowned for her contributions to the Spanish conquest of the Aztec Empire. Cortés employed her to communicate effectively and build relationships. Through her, he was able to understand Aztec customs, political dynamics, and religious beliefs. This understanding helped avoid immediate conflict and foster early cooperation.

Although these peaceful interactions were short-lived and eventually gave way to violence and conquest, they show that Cortés’s relationship with the Aztecs was not solely based on hostility from the beginning. There were initial attempts at diplomacy and mutual understanding. These efforts played a crucial role in shaping the early phases of contact between the two civilizations.
