Everything You Need to Know About Drink Spiking & How to Prevent It

Drink Spiking: Learn How to Prevent Being Slipped a Date-Rape Drug.

August 5, 2025

Spiking a drink is the act of putting either drugs or alcohol into someone’s beverage without that person knowing. Drink spiking is commonly done to both men and women for the purposes of either assault, rape, or even robbery. It is a real, serious, and potentially dangerous occurrence that should not be taken lightly. Let’s cover everything you need to know about drink spiking and how to prevent it.

What Substances Are Used in Drink Spiking?

The most common substance used to spike drinks in either nonalcoholic or alcoholic drinks is alcohol. However, drugs can also be used. Three ‘date rape’ drugs typically used include Rohypnol, gamma hydroxybutyrate, and ketamine.

Rohypnol

Rohypnol, or more commonly known as roofies, was originally created as a small white tablet that could dissolve in liquids. This makes it extremely easy to spike drinks.

To help prevent drink spiking, the tablet was made to produce a light blue dye once dissolved in liquid. However, this does not mean that drink spiking cannot still occur, especially if someone is not paying attention, is in a dark room, or has a dark-colored beverage.

This drug can cause dizziness, impaired judgment, a feeling of extreme intoxication, loss of muscle control, confusion, and even memory loss. Symptoms can take 15 to 20 minutes to take effect—potentially quicker if combined with alcohol.

Gamma Hydroxybutyrate

Gamma-Hydroxybutyrate (GHB) is a depressant commonly formulated as a clear, odorless liquid, typically with a salty taste. It can also be formulated as a powder that dissolves in liquid. Symptoms of GHB spiking include feelings of euphoria, drowsiness, difficulty walking or talking, confusion, memory loss, and unconsciousness.

Ketamine

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that can cause nausea, loss of motor functions, amnesia, and dizziness. It can also cause muscle stiffness, increase your heart rate, and even lead to hallucinations. When mixed with alcohol, ketamine can result in respiratory issues, unconsciousness, or death.

It is important to note that a person’s symptoms will vary depending on the dose of date rape drugs administered, the amount of alcohol consumed, and an individual’s weight and size.

Preventative Measures

One of the best ways to prevent drink spiking is by never leaving your drink unattended. Either take your beverage with you or leave it with a trusted friend. If you must leave your drink, discard it and get a new one.

Another simple way is to avoid taking drinks from strangers. If someone wants to buy you a drink, go with them and watch the bartender pour it. For maximum drink protection, consider investing in a drink cover

Overall, the best piece of advice is to trust your gut and be aware of your surroundings. If something feels off, toss the drink. If the drink tastes funny, discard it immediately. At the end of the day, it is better to spend the money on a new drink rather than suffer the symptoms and trauma from getting your drink spiked.

What to Do If You Feel Your Drink Has Been Spiked

If you suspect that your drink has been spiked, it is essential to inform a friend, a staff member, or security immediately about the situation. From here, you should seek medical attention. Seeking emergency services can help determine the drugs used in your drink, allowing medical professionals to provide the proper care you need.
