A recent trip down memory lane took me back to the SHOT Show 2007, where one of the most viral videos in the firearms world was born. I doubt anyone in the firearms culture has missed it. At the Magpul booth, an unassuming gentleman in glasses held what appeared to be a battery pack or oversized flashlight. With a swift motion and a practiced presentation, he transformed the black block into an SBR. The internet exploded as everyone rushed to catch a glimpse of the gun they never knew they needed until that moment. That gun was the Magpul FMG-9, which eventually evolved into the Magpul / Zev FDP-9.
After 18 Years It Is Ready For Production
Magpul Industries designed the FMG-9 as a prototype folding submachine gun made from polymer, reducing its weight compared to metal alternatives. However, it never moved beyond the prototype stage and didn’t see widespread production. Magpul created it merely as a proof of concept. Fast forward to 2012, when a friendly meeting between Zev Technologies and Magpul sparked something special. Now, 13 years later, the official announcement has arrived: the Magpul / Zev FDP-9 is ready for full production.

Magpul / Zev FDP-9 Tech
On a technical note, the FDP-9 rear cover features a fixed sling swivel for easy carrying when the pistol isn’t in use. The gun employs a Glock 17-round pattern double stack 9mm magazine. It can fold into the stowed position with the magazine still in place. Additionally, the gun includes a manual safety that operates in both the folded and unfolded positions, making it user-friendly. It is another standout feature from the Magpul / Zev collaboration.
In past articles, I’ve shared my love for my job, which lets me shoot guns and meet fascinating people. A standout moment came during an Athlon Outdoors Rendezvous, where we had the privilege of hosting Magpul and Zev once again. As soon as I arrived, the Magpul representative unveiled the unicorn many of us had discussed for the past 18 years—the new FDP-9. I felt like a kid in a candy store and eagerly began manipulating it. After a quick demo from the team, I grasped how easy it was to use.

Transformer Gun
With a simple press and shake of the hand, the black cube transformed into a functional firearm. Holding and manipulating the FDC-9 created a memorable experience, but my excitement truly peaked when they asked if I wanted to shoot it. Naturally, I replied with a resounding “yes.” I received a brief overview of the deployment and firing steps before jumping in. To my surprise, the gun shot very smoothly. Given its unique design, I had expected less performance. However, it was evident that Zev had invested significant effort to ensure it excelled as a shooter.
In no time, I hit steel targets at 10 yards, moving swiftly from plate to plate. The sights were decent, allowing me to quickly acquire targets and put rounds on them. The trigger, undoubtedly influenced by Zev’s expertise, offered a good take-up and a solid reset. As the exhilarating experience concluded, I reluctantly returned the FDP-9 to the representative and expressed my gratitude for the opportunity. I soon discovered a remarkable honor: I was the first person outside the Magpul team to fire the Magpul / Zev FDP-9. I felt thrilled by the moment.

Many Applications
As the excitement wore off, I shifted into logical mode, contemplating the practical applications of such a weapon. Its compact size suits personal protection. While I wouldn’t classify it as a traditional EDC gun, I could easily see it functioning as a truck or pack gun. It is simple to store and deploy quickly when necessary. Additionally, it serves as an excellent addition to a close protection team’s gear. Having a 9mm SBR stored in a discreet package is invaluable in the executive protection field.
One of the strongest reasons to own one is simply because you can. If anyone questions your choice, just say “Merica” and brush it off. The design’s most significant appeal lies in its inconspicuous appearance—it doesn’t resemble a gun at all, just an odd black box with a handle. While some may show curiosity, most people wouldn’t give it a second glance. I also appreciate that Zev Technologies handled the performance aspect, giving this gun immediate street cred. This isn’t just a gimmick meant for barbecues. It’s a real firearm designed to serve as a defensive option.

Magpul / Zev FDP-9
The firearms industry often teases us with exciting product concepts that never see the light of day. Even after 18 years, though, Magpul persevered to bring the FDP to life. Designed for both professional and personal use, the FDP will debut in both pistol and SBR carbine variants from ZEV Technologies in early 2025.
