The term innovation is often used with products that don’t really meet that criteria. While they may have some interesting features, it is rare that they are truly a game changer. There is a product currently in development, however, that is the epitome of innovation. It is the Speed9 from Mimic Firearms.
Mimic Speed9 – True Innovation

The Mimic Speed9 is the next evolution of the submachine gun. This revolutionary new platform blends the reliability and versatility of the AR platform with an all-new efficient capacity solution. It features an AR-15-dimensioned magazine holding 60 rounds of 9mm ammunition. Yes, you read that right. Mimic has designed a PCC rifle to run its proprietary magazines, which hold 60 rounds of 9mm ammunition.

The magazines are a stamped steel construction, including a divider down the center. Each chamber in the magazine holds 30 rounds. Rounds are easily loaded, and each chamber has rounds facing the opposite direction. When fired, the rounds feed until the magazine chamber is empty. The user pulls the mag out, flips it around, and reinserts. Then, we have the remaining 30 rounds ready to go. The patent pending 60rd magazine has AR15 magazine dimensions for familiarity and standard pouch utilization. Yes, they will fit in all of your standard AR mag pouches.
Compatible With Several AR Components
The gun is modular in design and utilizes standard AR triggers, buffer systems, barrels, handguards, furniture, pins, and detents. The upper includes Mimic’s RAD – rear ammunition depressor. This is where the magic happens. For this unique system to work, the rear stack of ammunition must be pressed down and clear of the bolt. This allows the gun to cycle freely and feed only the forward-facing rounds. When the stack is empty, and the magazine is reversed, the RAD will depress the follower to maintain clearance. This design also allows for last-round bolt hold.

Mimic Speed9
This is what innovation looks like. Having 60 rounds in a standard-sized AR magazine is a game changer. While the applications are many, I see an excellent home defense weapon. I would make it an SBR and promptly put a suppressor on it. The ability to have 60 rounds in the fight swings things my way in a hurry. I look forward to following the development of this innovative design.
