It is with deep sorrow that Hodgdon Powder Company announces the passing of John Brewster “JB” Hodgdon, who died on June 13, 2025, at the age of 88. A lifelong Kansan, JB was born on October 16, 1936, to Bruce and Amy Hodgdon. Raised in suburban Kansas City, JB remained rooted in his community throughout his life, giving generously to causes close to his heart—including local first responders, Scouting America (formerly Boy Scouts of America), and classic car enthusiasts.
He earned his business degree from the University of Kansas in 1959 and quickly began contributing to the family legacy at Hodgdon Powder Company.
JB Hodgdon’s Legacy in the Shooting Sports Industry
From humble beginnings—packaging gunpowder at the family dining room table—JB Hodgdon played a vital role in expanding the Hodgdon brand into one of the most respected names in the ammunition reloading and muzzleloading industries. Over the years, he led international sales, represented Hodgdon at countless trade shows, and served in key leadership positions on the company’s board of directors, including a long tenure as Chairman. In 2025, he was honored as Chairman Emeritus.
Alongside his brother Bob, JB helped transform Hodgdon Powder Company into the leading supplier of smokeless and black powder substitutes for shooters and reloaders worldwide. His passion for firearms and hunting was evident in both his personal collections and the trophies that adorned his home and office.
“JB was a first-rate owner, an incredible professional, and a valued friend and counselor throughout my career,” said Tom Shepherd, Chairman of the Board at Hodgdon. “I had the honor of working with the Hodgdon family and JB for over five decades. He will be deeply missed.”
Lifelong Advocate for Shooting Sports & Outdoor Heritage
JB Hodgdon was a tireless supporter of the shooting sports and conservation communities. He was a lifelong benefactor member of the NRA, a life member of the Kansas State Rifle Association, and an annual contributor to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF). His memberships also included Safari Club International, Pheasants Forever, Ducks Unlimited, and the National 4-H Shooting Sports program.
He had a special dedication to youth programs, especially through his support of Philmont Scout Ranch, Scouting America’s National High-Adventure Base in Cimarron, New Mexico. Together with his wife Anne, JB enhanced Philmont’s programs to help nurture the next generation of safe, responsible hunters and shooters.
His contributions were recognized through numerous industry honors, including:
- NSSF Hall of Fame Inductee (2020)
- NRA Golden Bullseye Pioneer Award (2009, with brother Bob)
- Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence Award (2009)
Family, Faith, and a Passion for the Outdoors
JB is survived by his beloved wife of 28 years, Anne, along with his four sons, two stepchildren, four grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Though he has passed, JB Hodgdon’s legacy lives on in the company he helped build, the lives he touched, and the lasting impact he made on the shooting sports world. His unwavering commitment to family, faith, hard work, and America’s outdoor heritage continues to inspire all who knew him.
