From their clandestine origins during Prohibition to today’s trendy hideaways, secret speakeasies have become cultural icons. Tired of the Jukebox and Pool Table Scene? It’s Time to Find a Speakeasy.

During Prohibition (1920–1933), speakeasies emerged as secret speakeasy places that were illicit yet vibrant social hubs. Patrons often risked fines or worse to sip adult beverages in hidden back rooms. These establishments gave rise to enduring cocktail traditions and helped normalize mixed drinks, which masked the foul taste of bootleg booze. The era also expanded social inclusion, ushering women into bars as respectable customers.

Prohibition drove people to secret bars called speakeasies.

Today, speakeasies have made a comeback and can be found all over the country. From simple makeshift versions to actual renovated old school clubs, the modern speakeasy is a nod to the past. Secret speakeasies provide a unique and enjoyable experience that is usually accompanied by craft cocktails, live jazz, and more.

Secret Speakeasies Have Endured

Speakeasies have endured for many reasons. At the top of the list is mystique and adventure. Whether dialing into a phone booth, pushing through a bookshelf, or pulling a hidden panel, entering a speakeasy is inherently cinematic. Visiting a secret speakeasy connects you with a tradition defined by rebellion, creativity, and the human penchant for connection despite restrictions.

They also have a cool atmosphere. Quiet conversations, low lighting, plush furnishings—speakeasies feel like a protected escape from the modern grind. While there are countless establishments we can look at, here are five of the most popular destinations.
