Sig Sauer 556 SBR

When it comes to close-quarters combat, it is hard to argue against the short-barreled rifle, or SBR. These weapons, when combined with a collapsible or folding stock, offer portability and ease of use in tight confines, such as operating inside and around vehicles. In building and room-clearing situations, SBRs make it easier to navigate while increasing weapon retention. At the same time, SBRs offer rifle-caliber firepower, higher magazine capacities over most pistols and rifle-like accuracy out to intermediate combat distances.

The growing popularity of SBRs in the law enforcement world is the driving force behind Sig Sauer’s new offerings, including the SIG556 SBR. This semi-automatic rifle is chambered in the ever-popular 5.56mm NATO and combines some of the best aspects of both the AR and the original Swiss battle rifle on which it is based.

Gun Details

Indeed, the SIG556 SBR is an Americanized, shortened and semi-automatic version of the SG550, the standard-issue battle rifle of the Swiss military. Like the SG550, the SIG556 utilizes a long-stroke, gas-piston method of operation, similar to that found on the AK series of rifles, where the bolt and piston rod all move as one complete unit. The piston-driven system keeps carbon fouling at the front of the gas system and mostly out of the receiver. This reduces operating temperatures inside the receiver, requires less lubrication than a standard direct impingement system and helps to increase the SIG556’s overall reliability. It also makes cleaning a less stressful affair. At the front of the gas system, the SIG556 SBR features an adjustable valve that can be rotated to provide more gas pressure to keep the rifle running even in the case of extreme fouling, which could otherwise affect functioning. Many of the components of the gas system are also made from stainless steel, providing an added margin of corrosion resistance.
