A Classic Returns with Style – The Sig Reserve Collection P226 X-Five

Recently, Sig held its NEXT at its headquarters in New Hampshire. During the event, we got hands-on with several new guns and upgrades. While the list of guns was long, one stood out for me: the new Sig Reserve Collection P226 X-5 with its high-polished glass finish.

The Sig P226 has been a staple for Sig for 40 years. This 226 is not your grandpa’s gun, however. While the P226 was always a solid gun, it gained notoriety when adopted by the Navy SEALs and DEVGRU. Since then, the gun has seen a few tweaks and turns.

Sig has upgraded this classic into the X5 line. That includes a high-polish DLC steel frame, for starters. The equally polished slide has a nice integrated compensator to manage recoil. You will also notice the grip change. The Sig Reserve Collection P226 X-5 has new, unique GridLOK grips that work as good as they look. It also has a high-polish flat face and a fully adjustable trigger system.

Upgrades

Other nice features of the gun include an extended beavertail grip, undercut trigger guard, extended magwell, and a factory Delta Point Pro/RMR footprint.  Sight-wise, Sig has installed a suppressor-height X-ray3 for day/night sights.

While all of this is intriguing, one addition caught my attention. Sig has included their sport-style takedown lever on this pistol. It is similar to what we see on the X-Five STAS model. In competition circles, it’s called a “gas pedal.” It gets this name because it’s a fantastic place to set your offside thumb and “drive” the gun.

Home on the Range

On the range, the gun was epic. I have about a billion hours on the standard P226, and this was a departure from that. This version is a dust particle away from being an entire pound heavier than the P226 Elite full-size. The plus of that is serious recoil reduction. Add in the integrated comp, and it turns into a tack driver at speed.

The upgrades that Sig has performed on the classic P226 are fantastic. Beyond its good looks, the gun is a shooter. If you are a gun nerd like me or just like shiny things, you need to take a look at the new Sig Reserve Collection P226 X-5.
