Firing CMMG’s New MK47 Mutant Hybrid at the Range

Many people have tried to merge the 7.62x39mm AK-47 and the AR for a long time. Various attempts have taken several different forms. ARs can be chambered in 7.62x39mm, but they require altered AR magazines. Sure, in this situation the accuracy is fine and ergonomics are great, but most magazines won’t reliably, can be expensive and are anything but prolific. Some choose to turn the AK into an AR with added rails, stocks and accessories attempting to mimic the AR’s ergonomics. Here you keep the AK’s reliability, but it is just not the same as having an AR. Others have altered gas systems, using the AK concept for the gas mechanism and bolt. Some are great—others, not so much. Others have built hybrid uppers, again with varying degrees of success. Many have asked for an AR that just uses AK magazines, which seems simple on the surface. A few have tried; most have been clunky, heavy or just did not work—that is until now.

CMMG has now introduced its new MK47 Mutant. Designed from the ground up as an AR rifle that uses AK magazines, the Mutant uses a slightly different principal. Instead of trying to make it work with a 5.56mm receiver set, the Mutant started with a 7.62x51mm bolt carrier group using a 7.62x39mm bolt. The rest of the rifle is built around it. You get a much stronger bolt, more carrier weight and a system that, overall, is much more durable. Designed to accept most any AK magazine, it does so without the bulk of previous attempts. Weighing in at 7 pounds, the Mutant remains light. It also uses an AR trigger, making it very versatile. The stock and KeyMod forend are also AR components. In short, the MK47 Mutant is truly unique, and it seems to really work.

Take just a minute and check out my video of the MK47 in action using the new Aimpoint T2 red-dot sight. I also tested the rifle with a couple of different suppressors.
