Since their invention in 1899, flashlights have become known for their ability to illuminate the darkness. From its creation, flashlights have gone through minor changes from incandescent bulbs (standard) to halogen and LED (Light-emitting diode). Two popular types of flashlights include standard and tactical lights.
Tactical vs. Standard Flashlights: What’s the Difference?
To help fully understand the difference between these two tools, let us shine some light on each device’s function, design, brightness, lighting features, and durability.
What is a Standard Flashlight?
Regular flashlights are handheld, portable devices that use disposable or rechargeable batteries. Depending on the brand and model, many standard flashlights use either a bulb or LEDs and feature a cylindrical body.
These illumination sources are often used during power outages, car repairs, outdoor activities, or simple everyday tasks around the house. For this reason, they cross all demographic lines. Standard flashlights are used by everyone equally, across the board.

What is a Tactical Flashlight?
Similar to regular flashlights, a tactical flashlight can be used as a handheld device. However, they can also be mounted onto a weapon to help identify targets in low-light conditions. The smaller “tactical” models are usually carried on a person or in vehicles. This is mainly due to tactical flashlights being smaller, more durable, and, as the definition indicates, always ready.
These flashlights often utilize LED lights and are commonly used by the military and law enforcement. As they gained more popularity, tactical flashlights quickly became ideal for emergencies and self-defense purposes.
These lights make a great non-lethal defense tool because they are designed with a striking bezel. In addition, the brightness can cause visual impairment to an attacker.
The bezel area is located at the rim of the flashlight and is made with sharp edges to allow an individual to strike at an assailant and cause significant damage. Depending on the make and model of a tactical light, this pointed area can also be used to break glass.
Brightness
One of the most noticeable differences between tactical and standard flashlights is their lumen output. For those unaware, lumens measure the total amount of visible light from a light source. This means that the more lumens a flashlight has, the brighter the flashlight will be.
A typical flashlight will have a range of 100 to 500 lumens, while tactical flashlights typically have a range of 1000 to 3000 lumens. For example, the 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T Flashlight has a 30 (low mode) and 1,200 (high mode) lumen output.

Lighting Modes
Depending on the make and model of your flashlight, both regular and tactical flashlights often feature different lighting modes. These modes can range from low, medium, and high brightness levels.
However, one feature that is not common in regular flashlights is known as strobe lighting. This series of quick flashes of light can temporarily stun an attacker or signal for help during an emergency.
Furthermore, many tactical lights are designed with a button on the end of the flashlight known as the tail switch. This placement can help individuals quickly cycle through different light variations. However, standard flashlights often feature a button or switch on the side of the device to cycle through different lighting modes and turn the device on and off.

Durability
Tactical flashlights are created to be durable and long-lasting, making them ideal for use during outdoor activities. These lights are crafted using aircraft-gradealuminum or stainless steel, while standard flashlights are made using aluminum or plastic.
Many tactical flashlights are even made to be waterproof, especially the 5.11 Tactical Response XR1T Flashlight that I referenced earlier. This light has an IP68 water-resistant rating and can be fully submerged in 2 meters of water for 30 minutes.
Final Thoughts
Overall, both tactical and regular flashlights are made for different purposes and have features that can help you determine the type of light you need. Tactical lights are bright, durable, and made to allow an individual to better prioritize their personal safety. However, standard flashlights are an affordable option that is great to use for small, basic tasks around your home.
