Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot

Red dots have changed the firearms landscape. Once the realm of quirky, inconsistent technology, it is now a reliable piece of equipment we demand. Adding a red dot, from pistols to rifles, makes shooting faster and more accurate. We have even seen red dots make their way into the shotgun world. The challenge faced there, however, has been mounting our new optic. While you can get a handgun milled for an optic, it gets tricky with a shotgun. The solution has been to throw a rail on top of the gun and then stack an optic on top of that. This is tough to shoot well because we lose our cheek weld.  A company that is always keen to offer solutions is Vortex. After a long R&D period, they have a solution. And an excellent solution it is—the Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot.

The Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot is purpose-built for the fast pace of turkey hunting and wing shooting.  The Viper delivers an ultra-low-profile design and wide field of view for intuitive shooting and superior recoil control. Its enclosed design and integrated universal mount ensure seamless operation and maximum protection against the elements.

The optic is a low-profile red dot that boasts the lowest mount right out of the box. There are no plates, rails, or stacking tolerances. It delivers a tight cheek weld that lends critical advantages to shotgun shooters, plus reticle adjustability, an excellent field of view, and environmental resilience against rain, dust, and snow.

The Integrated Universal Mounting System is designed for drilled and tapped shotgun receivers. The optic sits directly on the receiver with no rail needed, keeping it low and allowing us to use the same cheek weld we have always used. The multi-reticle adapts quickly to various lighting situations, and the lens is crystal clear. The large viewing window allows for fast target acquisition and a large field of view downrange.

The Advantages of a Red Dot

To those who grew up shooting a bead site, a shotgun optic may seem a bit much. I know because I was that guy. I was a classic Iron Sight shooter until I realized my eyes weren’t 25 years old. Then came the day I tried a red dot on my beloved boomstick, and I have not looked back since. I find the most benefit in downrange awareness and finding my target. The ability to shoot with both eyes open has huge advantages.

The Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot is a quality piece of gear. It is durable, easy to use and adjust, and lightweight. It has shake-awake technology that gives you a dot the second you move your gun. This helps battery life, but with a 50,000-hour life to begin with, the unit runs a very long time. Vortex is making the optic with two different reticle options: a 3-MOA single red dot and a multi-reticle.

While the optic was designed for hunting, my mind also looks for personal protection applications. The Micro Red Dot is an excellent option for a defensive shotgun. I mounted the optic on a Mossberg 590 A1 short-barrel shotgun. This epitomizes a defensive shotgun, and the optic is a perfect fit. I rechecked the pattern on my shotgun and then did various drills. The optic allowed me faster shots without question.

The Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot is a modern solution to an age-old challenge. This new optic allows us to bring our favorite shotguns into the 21st century.  If you want to add glass to your shotgun, look no further than the Vortex Viper Shotgun Enclosed Micro Red Dot. You won’t be disappointed.
