Suddenly, an enormous crash, obliterating the bunker, the PK and its crew, measures the lethal enormity of the insurgents\u2019 mistaken belief.\r\n\r\nThis scenario soon will be a common experience for those ambushing U.S. ground forces from protected positions at night thanks to a simple, low-cost laser sight that gives the M72 Light Anti-tank Weapon (LAW) the capability to defend and protect American troops from such attacks day or night.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nFire By Night<\/i><\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe new LAW laser sight comes from Crimson Trace Corporation (CTC) of Wilsonville, Oregon. Since 1994, CTC has manufactured pistol-grip-integrated, \u201cinstinctively activated\u201d (illuminated when holding and pointing the firearm) laser sights that project a visible red or green beam onto the aiming point. CTC now is a global leader in laser sight development and production, with more than 200 systems priced around $400 or less, including grip-integrated, rail- and frame-mounted laser sights for many popular handgun models as well as AR-15 rifles with both visible and invisible infrared beams for use with night-vision equipment.\r\n\r\nThe M72 LAW, produced by Nammo Talley of Mesa, Ariz., has been an infantry mainstay for more than 50 years. It is a lighter, more portable and inexpensive derivative of the World War II bazooka, firing self-propelled, 66mm munitions from a two-piece extendable tube that is usually discarded after firing. Over the years, the LAW, with several variants currently in use in nearly 30 nations, has incorporated many enhancements, including improved reliability, better triggers and more accurate, powerful rounds tailored for both hard and soft targets with A7 anti-armor and A9 anti-structure rounds. But, the weapon could not overcome a major operational limitation\u2014its rudimentary folding peep sight is awkward in optimum conditions and nearly impossible to use in darkness at extended ranges, making the M72 a daylight-only weapon despite the marked increase in nighttime combat operations and a clear need for penetrative munitions to neutralize structural targets concealing\r\nadversaries.\r\n\r\nNow, CTC\u2019s new LAW laser sight gives the system true 24\/7 capability. According to Jeff Hoblitt of CTC Defense, Nammo Talley approached the company in 2010 to develop the sight system. \u201cWe completed the system development a year and a half after receiving the request,\u201d Hoblitt said. \u201cWe had a prototype ready for evaluation in September of 2011.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nLaying Down The LAW<\/i><\/strong>\r\n\r\nEvaluations included military specification testing to MIL-STD-810G, the Department of Defense\u2019s protocol covering field and laboratory environmental factor tests including extreme hot and cold temperatures, total immersion in soil, water and other fluids, exposure to dust and sand, vibration and shock. Compliance with MIL-STD-810G ensures the LAW laser sight will take plenty of abuse and still function properly in any combat situation.\r\n\r\nLaser technology was not an issue for the new sight. \u201cIt\u2019s not more powerful or complicated than other laser systems,\u201d Hoblitt added. \u201cThe system\u2019s advanced nature is based on its interface with a mounting plate that ensures the laser is automatically bore-sighted when installed on the M72, and an elevation adjustment efficiently and accurately calibrates range to target.\u201d CTC had to develop the dynamics of the interface between the laser and the baseplate, upon which it is mounted in just a couple of seconds. The connection is simple and purely mechanical, but it ensures proper alignment between the beam and the rocket\u2019s trajectory and requires minimal training. The baseplate cost is low, so it can be discarded with the firing tube once the LAW has been used.\r\n\r\nHoblitt also noted that the laser sight, using both a visible red beam and an invisible infrared light visible with night-vision goggles (NVGs) widely used by U.S. troops in night operations, is an eye-safe, low-power device generating less than 5 milliwatts (mW). \u201cMost Western military forces are interested in infrared beams,\u201d explained Hoblitt, \u201cbecause they\u2019re visible only with NVGs, while red beams mark the operator\u2019s position and make him vulnerable to counter-fire, especially at night. Visible beams are, however, very useful for training.\u201d\r\n\r\nIn addition to permitting nighttime use, making the M72 a 24\/7 weapon system, the new laser also enhances firing during daylight. \u201cAlthough it is very flexible and versatile, the LAW is more difficult to aim and fire than a rifle even in the best conditions,\u201d Hoblitt explained. \u201cBecause the tube balances on top of the operator\u2019s shoulder and has no stock or brace, it is not as ergonomically stable as a rifle, so lining up the peep sight can be difficult. With the laser sight installed, accurate aiming is a far easier two-dimensional process. The operator\u2019s head can be in any position because the front and rear sights require no alignment. You can literally point and shoot.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe laser has a maximum range of about 400 meters, far beyond the operational range of the LAW itself. Although the laser beam broadens at greater distances and is subject to a variety of lighting conditions, it is exceptionally accurate even at long ranges. \u201cIn testing, Navy SEALs who had never fired LAWs before were consistently hitting targets at 350 yards,\u201d Hoblitt said. \u201cThey never missed!\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nBattle Ready<\/i><\/strong>\r\n\r\nThe CTC laser sight is now available to U.S. military forces. U.S. Army Rangers have ordered a quantity, and the sight was issued a National Stock Number in June 2014. The cost of the laser, according to Hoblitt, is low, about $300 or less, about the same as most CTC commercial lasers. The system includes the sight and the mounting bracket. Nammo Talley is planning to install brackets on newly manufactured LAWs in the factory soon, guaranteeing widespread sight use. For M72s already in military inventories, CTC has created a bracket clamp that provides identical functionality once installed on the LAW tube. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t easy to ensure the bracket clamp provides the same automatic bore-sighting,\u201d Hoblitt said, \u201cbut we did it.\u201d\r\n\r\nToday, CTC\u2019s laser sight is only available for the LAW, but Hoblitt notes, \u201cWe have the capability and intention to use it for similar systems. Quite frankly, I\u2019m cheap about a lot of things in life, but not when it comes to my personal protection gear. I always try to buy quality so I only have to buy once, but I certainly realize everyone has different budget limitations. On the lower end of the laser market you\u2019ll spend around $100. Crimson Trace, which has been making lasers for more than 17 years, sells its Rail Master Universal Laser Sight for $169. It\u2019s a red laser that quickly mounts to Picatinny or Weaver rails, and many shooters love this inexpensive laser. The fact of the matter is, if you\u2019re looking for a no-frills laser, this is it. For about $129, you can also get the LaserMax Uni-Max Micro. This is a red laser that mounts to almost any handgun on the market. If you\u2019ve got a pocket gun such as a Ruger LCP, you can get the LaserMax CF-LCP. It\u2019s a red laser that costs roughly the same as the Uni-Max and offers five hours of battery time.\n\nRELATED: Top 10 Ultra-Compact Laser Systems For Your CCW Pistol<\/a><\/strong>\n\nAnother laser manufacturer, Viridian<\/a>, has its C5-R<\/a> rail-mounted red laser for $139. ArmaLaser<\/a> makes the smallest mounted lasers on the market today. So if you don\u2019t want a bulky laser hanging off the end of the gun, you should check out what ArmaLaser has to offer. For about $139 you can get the ArmaLaser Stingray SR1<\/a>, which is the company\u2019s universal red, mounted laser.\n\nLaser Devices<\/a> may not be as well known to consumers because its makes a lot of products for the military. Products from Laser Devices are typically more high-end and you\u2019re going to spend $500 or more for one of its devices. For instance, the DBAL-PL<\/a> model is a laser\/light combination that offers a red laser and a 500-lumen white light, which is plenty of light for any home-defense situation.\n\nCombo Benefits<\/strong>\n\n Crimson Trace CMR-205[\/caption]\n\nOf course, other manufacturers make laser\/light combinations that are less expensive than $500, but do you really need one? In my opinion, if you\u2019re going to get a laser, you should definitely buy one that comes with the light, too. After all, if you only get the laser and you think there\u2019s an intruder in your home, your support hand will have to hold the flashlight so you can see. Now, I don\u2019t know about you, but if someone has broken into my home, I\u2019d prefer to have two hands on my gun to give me the best accuracy possible. That\u2019s why, on my own gun, I have it set to have both the flashlight and the laser on at the same time. My flashlight is 100 lumens, and although that may not sound like much, it\u2019s plenty of light for my house, and it\u2019s likely plenty for yours, too.\n\nRELATED: Night Sights, Lights & Lasers For Pistols<\/a><\/strong>\n\nOne thing to note is that when you have the laser and the light on at the same time, you will be able to clearly see the laser but the person on the other end of the gun won\u2019t. This is because the white light cancels out the laser for the person facing the wrong end of the barrel. So the fact that an intruder can\u2019t see my laser doesn\u2019t bother me at all, because I can and that\u2019s what matters.\n\nIf you decide to purchase a laser\/light combination, Crimson Trace makes the Rail Master Pro CMR-205<\/a>. It\u2019s a 100-lumen light and red laser that mounts to any Picatinny or Weaver rail. It has two hours of battery life and automatically turns off after five minutes of non-use. The price point of the CMR-205 is around $275. Laser Devices offers the Blast 2<\/a>, which includes a red laser and a 200-lumen white light. If you\u2019re really concerned about being able to see in the dark, you should definitely take a closer look at the Blast 2, which sells for around $400. Viridian also makes a green laser\/light combination, the C5L<\/a>. It mounts to almost any handgun, has a 100-lumen light and also has a 140-lumen \u201cstrobe mode\u201d to disorient an attacker. The C5L will cost you about $300.\n\nReal-World Utility<\/strong>\n\n\n\nSo far we\u2019ve established that there\u2019s a laser for almost any budget and that it\u2019s a good idea to get the laser\/light combination. But what about the color of the laser itself? Should you purchase a laser\/light combo that includes a red or a green laser? Well, some people\u2019s knee-jerk reaction might be to go with the red laser because it looks more intimidating when pointed at the bad guy. But remember, when you have the light and laser on at the same time, the bad guy won\u2019t be able to see the laser; only you will. Since being able to properly see the laser is clearly of utmost importance, I recommend going with the green laser over the red laser.\n\nRELATED: Best New Rifle Optics and Sights For Fall 2014<\/a><\/strong>\n\nIt\u2019s been reported that a green laser is anywhere from five to 50 times more visible than a red laser. Why? Without getting too technical and boring you to death, the color green is closer to the center of the visible spectrum, which means it\u2019s easier for our eyes to see. If you know someone who has both a green and red laser, go outside during the day and point them at an object far away and you\u2019ll quickly see what I mean.\n\nSince a green laser is easier to see, this is what I\u2019ve chosen for my home defense gun. Right now, mounted to my Glock 19, is the Viridian C5L. I\u2019ve been very pleased with this purchase and haven\u2019t had any problems with it. Crimson Trace also recently released a green laser\/light combination with its CMR-204 Rail Master Pro<\/a>. Whatever laser you decide to go with, don\u2019t forget to zero it. Personally, I zero my laser so it\u2019s directly lined up with my front sight. Also, don\u2019t forget to train with the laser. Products from Laser Devices are typically more high-end and you\u2019re going to spend $500 or more for one of its devices. For instance, the DBAL-PL<\/a> model is a laser\/light combination that offers a red laser and a 500-lumen white light, which is plenty of light for any home-defense situation.\n\nCombo Benefits<\/strong>\n\n Crimson Trace CMR-205[\/caption]\n\nOf course, other manufacturers make laser\/light combinations that are less expensive than $500, but do you really need one? In my opinion, if you\u2019re going to get a laser, you should definitely buy one that comes with the light, too. But what about the color of the laser itself? Should you purchase a laser\/light combo that includes a red or a green laser? Well, some people\u2019s knee-jerk reaction might be to go with the red laser because it looks more intimidating when pointed at the bad guy. But remember, when you have the light and laser on at the same time, the bad guy won\u2019t be able to see the laser; only you will. CTC now is a global leader in laser sight development and production, with more than 200 systems priced around $400 or less, including grip-integrated, rail- and frame-mounted laser sights for many popular handgun models as well as AR-15 rifles with both visible and invisible infrared beams for use with night-vision equipment.\r\n\r\nThe M72 LAW, produced by Nammo Talley of Mesa, Ariz., has been an infantry mainstay for more than 50 years. It is a lighter, more portable and inexpensive derivative of the World War II bazooka, firing self-propelled, 66mm munitions from a two-piece extendable tube that is usually discarded after firing. Over the years, the LAW, with several variants currently in use in nearly 30 nations, has incorporated many enhancements, including improved reliability, better triggers and more accurate, powerful rounds tailored for both hard and soft targets with A7 anti-armor and A9 anti-structure rounds. But, the weapon could not overcome a major operational limitation\u2014its rudimentary folding peep sight is awkward in optimum conditions and nearly impossible to use in darkness at extended ranges, making the M72 a daylight-only weapon despite the marked increase in nighttime combat operations and a clear need for penetrative munitions to neutralize structural targets concealing\r\nadversaries.\r\n\r\nNow, CTC\u2019s new LAW laser sight gives the system true 24\/7 capability. According to Jeff Hoblitt of CTC Defense, Nammo Talley approached the company in 2010 to develop the sight system. \u201cWe completed the system development a year and a half after receiving the request,\u201d Hoblitt said. \u201cWe had a prototype ready for evaluation in September of 2011.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nLaying Down The LAW<\/i><\/strong>\r\n\r\nEvaluations included military specification testing to MIL-STD-810G, the Department of Defense\u2019s protocol covering field and laboratory environmental factor tests including extreme hot and cold temperatures, total immersion in soil, water and other fluids, exposure to dust and sand, vibration and shock. Compliance with MIL-STD-810G ensures the LAW laser sight will take plenty of abuse and still function properly in any combat situation.\r\n\r\nLaser technology was not an issue for the new sight. \u201cIt\u2019s not more powerful or complicated than other laser systems,\u201d Hoblitt added. \u201cThe system\u2019s advanced nature is based on its interface with a mounting plate that ensures the laser is automatically bore-sighted when installed on the M72, and an elevation adjustment efficiently and accurately calibrates range to target.\u201d CTC had to develop the dynamics of the interface between the laser and the baseplate, upon which it is mounted in just a couple of seconds. The connection is simple and purely mechanical, but it ensures proper alignment between the beam and the rocket\u2019s trajectory and requires minimal training. The baseplate cost is low, so it can be discarded with the firing tube once the LAW has been used.\r\n\r\nHoblitt also noted that the laser sight, using both a visible red beam and an invisible infrared light visible with night-vision goggles (NVGs) widely used by U.S. troops in night operations, is an eye-safe, low-power device generating less than 5 milliwatts (mW). \u201cMost Western military forces are interested in infrared beams,\u201d explained Hoblitt, \u201cbecause they\u2019re visible only with NVGs, while red beams mark the operator\u2019s position and make him vulnerable to counter-fire, especially at night. Visible beams are, however, very useful for training.\u201d\r\n\r\nIn addition to permitting nighttime use, making the M72 a 24\/7 weapon system, the new laser also enhances firing during daylight. \u201cAlthough it is very flexible and versatile, the LAW is more difficult to aim and fire than a rifle even in the best conditions,\u201d Hoblitt explained. \u201cBecause the tube balances on top of the operator\u2019s shoulder and has no stock or brace, it is not as ergonomically stable as a rifle, so lining up the peep sight can be difficult.
