If that’s the case, then why would the majority of shooters, who are right-handed, need ambidextrous AR safeties for their firearms? Could it simply be a case of people wanting every bell and whistle on their rifle? What use could there be for a non-leftie?

Some right-handed shooters will tell you that ambidextrous AR safeties are a waste of money and absolutely unneeded. We disagree. Some of us are right-handed and find ambidextrous safeties useful. When we shoot AR-15s and other AR-type rifles, it’s fast and safe to use our trigger fingers to flip the switch on the right side of the lower receiver back to the “safe” position. When we’re ready to fire, we flip the lever on the left side of the receiver down to the “fire” position with our thumbs.

It’s the way we’ve trained, and it works very well for us. By not having your trigger finger anywhere near the trigger—since it’s busy flipping the safety switch—you avoid the possibility of a negligent discharge. Using the thumb to place the rifle on “safe” can be awkward, and some people keep their trigger finger on the trigger while doing so, which increases the probability of an accidental discharge. For those who are more tactical-minded, the idea of transitioning hands and shoulders to fire your rifle is also a possibility in a real-life scenario. Ambidextrous safeties also make this easier to do safely.

Ambidextrous safeties have come a long way since they were first introduced. Manufacturers now offer them in a variety of different shapes, contours, and colors, and many now even feature interchangeable lever sets. The opportunity to tailor-fit your rifle’s safety is a good thing in our book. The following guide covers ambidextrous safeties that will fit most AR-15, AR-10, DPMS-patterned AR rifles and more. Take a look and see which one is right for you.

The precision rifle market is one of the fastest-growing segments of the firearms world. With the boom in PRS competitions and a fascination with super-long-range shooting, what was once the realm of “gun nerds” has gained a huge following. But it’s not uncommon for high-end guns in this arena to come with $5,000 price tags.

[in_content post="10172" alignment="align-left" /]
Thankfully, several manufacturers are now offering long range rifles that offer plenty of features without going too far into or beyond the $2,000 range. These guns are well within the reach of most shooters.

Every shooter is different, and this list of long range rifles offers a wide spectrum of choices. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the best that have more recent come to market.

The BadRock South Fork is a visually stunning rifle with a sleek black aluminum chassis. The buttstock is fully adjustable for length of pull and cheek height, and left- and right-handed actions are available. This is great news for all the southpaws out there. The receiver is made from pre-hardened, aircraft-certified stainless steel and features a cone-nosed, controlled-feed extractor made by Defiance Machine as well as a TriggerTech trigger. The match-grade stainless steel barrel is threaded for a brake or suppressor, and BadRock currently offers the gun in .223 Remington, 6mm Creedmoor, 6.5 Creedmoor, .308 Winchester, 6.5 PRC, and .300 PRC.

MSRP: $1,995-$2,145; (badrockrifles.com)

Bergara has long been known as the gold standard in barrels, and its complete rifles are worthy of that heritage. The Ridgeback builds on that reputation with a medium-Palma barrel, a hand-laid fiberglass stock and a two-lug action with a separate floating bolt head for proper alignment. It also features a cone-shaped bolt nose and a spring-loaded sliding plate extractor. The two-position safety is part of the trigger assembly, which is a TriggerTech unit with Bergara’s Frictionless Release Technology. This allows you to unload the rifle while the gun is still on safe.

MSRP: $2,329-$2,379; (bergarausa.com)

This rifle includes all of the DNA Browning is known for, but most notable is the new composite Max stock, which has an adjustable comb as well as a comfortable, more vertical pistol grip to optimize your trigger reach. The length of pull is adjustable via spacers, and Browning includes three sling swivel studs. Browning drills and taps the X-Bolt receiver for optics, and Browning includes an extended bolt handle. The hand-chambered, fluted, 26-inch, stainless steel barrel has 5/8x24-tpi threading, and a removable muzzle brake is included as well as a thread protector.

MSRP: $1,429.99 - $1,529.99; (browning.com)

Serious shooters should take a look at the Christensen Arms Modern Precision Rifle (MPR). This gun is feature-rich and includes a free-floating, hand-lapped, carbon-fiber- wrapped 416R stainless steel barrel as well as V-Block bedding to deliver pinpoint accuracy. It also has a removable, adjustable side baffle brake and 5/8x24 threaded muzzle for easy customization. The MPR also has a match-grade flat trigger, a 20-MOA top rail for optics and a nitride-treated, twin-lug, spiral-fluted bolt. The dual ejector is compatible with magnum calibers. All of this comes in a 7075-T6 aluminum chassis with a folding and fully adjustable buttstock.

MSRP: $2,499; (christensenarms.com)

Daniel Defense has taken the modularity of the AR platform and integrated it into a one-of-a-kind bolt-action rifle. From an interchangeable, cold-hammer-forged barrel to a user-configurable stock, the Delta 5 features out-of-the-box customization that would normally require professional gunsmithing. The action houses a three-lug bolt with a 60-degree throw and a floating bolt head. The single-stage Timney Elite Hunter trigger can be set between 1.5 and 4 pounds. Daniel Defense also includes a two-position safety, as well as a 20-MOA top rail. The carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer stock is adjustable for length of pull and buttpad height for a custom fit.

MSRP: $1,871; (danieldefense.com)

This rife pairs a Modular Driven Technologies (MDT) chassis with the Howa Model 1500 action to balance precision with affordability. The full-length chassis is highly customizable, as users can adjust the length of pull and comb height. More features include a two-lug bolt with an integrated recoil lug, a free-floating barrel and a two-stage Howa Activated Controlled Trigger (HACT) with a clean break set between 2.5 and 3 pounds. The rifle also accepts AICS-style magazines, and Howa includes a sub-MOA accuracy guarantee.

MSRP: $1,059-$1,099; (legacysports.com)

The MVP LR Thunder Ranch is a long-range tack driver that will serve any shooter well. The benchrest-style stock gives you a rock-solid shooting platform, and your favorite high-powered optic will lock easily onto the Picatinny top rail. It also accepts LR-308/SR-25 and M1A/M14 magazines. The adjustable Lightning Bolt Action (LBA) trigger allows you to fine-tune the rifle to your shooting style, and Mossberg includes a rubberized adjustable cheekrest. More features include a fluted, 20-inch medium bull barrel, an oversized bolt handle and a Kuiu Camo finish.

MSRP: $974; (mossberg.com)

The only AR-platform rifle on this list, the 1121XR offers the accuracy of a bolt action with the speed and recoil control of a semi-auto. Available in .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor with a 20- or -22-inch barrel made of 416R stainless steel, respectively, each model has a number of features to suit today’s demanding shooters, including billet-crafted 7075-T6 receivers, a black-nitrided bolt carrier group and an ambidextrous safety. The star of the show is Rise’s own RA-535 Advanced Performance Trigger, which is a single-stage unit with a 3.5-pound pull, a crisp release, no overtravel and a short reset. Finally, the 15-inch handguard accepts M-LOK accessories, and Rise includes the RA-701 compensator for fast follow-up shots.

MSRP: $2,449; (risearmament.com)

This rifle is an instant classic thanks to its stock, which has a two-way-adjustable cheekpiece, a soft rubber recoil pad, QD sling-mounting points and a flush-mounted lower M-LOK rail. The free-floating, cold-hammer-forged, 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel sports 5R rifling, tight dimensions and a Ruger Precision Rifle hybrid muzzle brake to reduce recoil while minimizing noise and blast. More features include a two-stage adjustable trigger, a three-position safety and a 20-MOA top rail.

MSRP: $1,569 (ruger.com)

While the Ruger Precision Rifle has been popular for a number of years now, the company recently unveiled a new version in .300 PRC with a 30-MOA top rail as well as a heavy cold-hammer-forged barrel manufactured from 4140 chrome-moly steel with 5R rifling for optimal ballistics. Out front you’ll find a tunable muzzle break to reduce recoil and muzzle rise. The 18-inch handguard features M-LOK slots and a bottom dovetail for RRA SOAR and similar QD accessories. The “lower” features an ambidextrous safety and a trigger that is adjustable from 2.25 to 5 pounds externally. Ruger also includes two 5-round AICS-style mags.

MSRP: $1,879 (ruger.com)

The new Havak Bravo features a match-grade barrel with 5R rifling and a light-tactical contour as well as a KRG Bravo chassis, making it a great option for PRS-style matches with production divisions. The Havak action has a matte Armor-Blak finish and features a full-diameter bolt with four locking lugs and a 90-degree throw. The bolt lugs, when locked in battery, are oriented at 3 and 9 o’clock—not the typical 12 and 6 o’clock positioning; this allows more room for a generous feed ramp. The rifle also features a 20-MOA top rail, accepts AICS-style magazines and utilizes a Timney 510 trigger set at 3 and 3.5 pounds.

MSRP: $1,950 (seekinsprecision.com)

The Steyr Pro THB is available in .308 Winchester and 6.5 Creedmoor. Like Steyr’s other high-performance rifles, the Pro THB features the Safe Bolt System (SBS), a unique “2+1” safety function that offers three settings operated by a wheel on the tang of the stock. The magazine can also be loaded into two different positions, one of which allows you to load individual rounds through the ejection port if needed.

MSRP: $1,419; (steyr-arms.com)

Not long ago, you had only a couple of choices for quality scope rings or single-piece mounts. It is not difficult to see why Seekins is becoming the name on the lips of many hunters—veteran or cherry—this year. But let's look at why I'm saying that.

[in_content post="7943" alignment="align-left" /]

Posing a Question

Spend enough time (three minutes, tops) at a hunting camp or a rifle range and, without fail, someone will pose the bait question of, "If you had to pick just one rifle to hunt with for the rest of your life, what would it be?"

While far from ground-breaking, this inquiry causes a pause as you wonder, could I be a one-rifle hunter? Am I ready to burn my little black DOPE book? Is the brass greener on the other side Better yet, because obviously I can handle that—I mean, I think I could, maybe—is there a lone rifle out there that is capable of living up to the following expectations?

Seekins Havak Pro Hunter 2 Details

The Havak Pro Hunter 2 features many of the great features of the Pro Hunter 1. However, it delivers them in a newly designed lightweight carbon composite stock. It also includes an Elite Hunter Timney Trigger, as well as three new caliber options (300 PRC, .338 Win Mag, 7mm Rem Mag).

The carbon composite stock's new manufacturing process yields a 3-ounce weight reduction compared to that of the Pro Hunter 1. This weight reduction does not come at the cost of durability; the improved stock is even more durable than before. Combine that with a near-vertical grip for increased precision, a textured non-slip coating, an integrated bipod lug and quick-detach sling swivel cups, and you've got a stock that's adaptable to any hunting environment.

Other Features

The addition of the Elite Hunter Trigger from Timney—factory tuned to 2.5 pounds—provides a crisp, single-stage break. It also further increases the accuracy that we've come to know from the Havak. The Havak action continues to set the standard for hunting rifles. Between the bead-blasted finish, spiral fluting, 4 locking lugs with 90-degree bolt throw, and integrated recoil lug, the Havak action is the foundation of what a precision rifle should be. But is it durable, you ask? This thing is made from U.S.-certified, pre-hardened stainless steel. Go ahead and breathe that in, because you know it made you feel patriotic and blue-collar.

Taking it one step further, Seekins hand-bedded each barreled action to ensure a perfect fit with the carbon composite stock. This precise bedding ensures that you get the most consistent pressure relationship between the barrel and the stock, even in extreme temperature and humidity. This pressure consistency might as well be insurance, because it's directly linked to the probability of the rifle to maintain zero, regardless of external variables. Tight groups are great, and this rifle will punch them all day, but in a hunting rifle, the ability to maintain zero is paramount. The Pro Hunter 2 carries the design features that won't disappoint in that department.

Shooting Variety

Now all the Pro Hunter 2 has to do for it to qualify as the answer to the one-gun Hunter's search is an offering in the most capable hunting cartridge on the market, which is officially titled "agree to disagree."

Though opinions vary, for the North American big game hunter, there is no task or tag too big or too small for the .300 Win Mag or the 7mm Rem Mag. Lucky for all of us, with the new caliber offerings of the Pro Hunter 2, the choice is yours. Seekins also offers the rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor, 6.5 PRC, 6mm Creedmoor, .308 Win, 28 Nosler, .300 PRC, and .338 Win Mag. Seekins pairs each with a specific barrel length and twist pitch to deliver unmatched precision.

So, if you're looking for the one gun that can do it all, you're in luck. And what's the worst that could happen? You later decide you want a different gun for each day of hunting season. Well, good thing the first one in that collection set the bar incredibly high. MSRP is $1,895.

The Seekins Precision .224 Valkyrie Releases

The first rifle, the VKR18, features an 18-inch match grade barrel machined from 416-5R stainless steel and threaded at ½-28. It also features a free-floating NOXs 15-inch handguard; skeletonized NX15 upper CNC machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum; Magpul ACS-L stock; adjustable gas block; ambidextrous controls and Seekins' own Nest flash hider.

"The VKR18 complete rifle capitalizes on our lightweight components creating a rifle that is easy to manipulate during sporting applications," the company says.

Next is the VKR20. Billed as the "ultimate competition and long-range rifle," this model boasts a 20-inch match grade 5R barrel with a 1:7 twist. In addition, the barrel comes standard with a ATC (Advanced Tactical Compensator) brake. Meanwhile, the rifle has a iRMT-3 upper receiver and SP223 ambi billet lower receiver, both of which are CNC machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum. It also includes a SP3R-V3 M-LOK handguard which is free floated and flat on the bottom. The receiver and the hand guard are Mil-Spec Type III Hardcoat Anodized matte black. Rounding out this rifle is a ProComp 10x stock and Timney Targa trigger.

Notes on the Ammo

While we're jazzed about Seekins' new .224 Valkyrie offerings, the company does add a caveat that it tested a number of ammo and bullet designs which performed well, but it found the 90gr ammo to be "less than satisfactory." See the full message below:

Please Note: With the long-awaited release of Seekins Precision chambering of the .224 Valkyrie, we are now offering complete rifles, complete uppers and barrels in this exciting new caliber. After extensive testing and collaboration with designers and ammunition manufacturers, we have found the wide variety of ammunition and bullet designs from the light varmint bullets to the mid-weight match offerings perform exceedingly well. However, we found the accuracy of the 90gr ammo to be less than satisfactory and for this reason, cannot guarantee accuracy with the current production 90gr ammunition. As ammunition manufacturers continue to advance new loads with different bullet designs, there is sure to be future options that will live up to Seekins Precision standards.

The VKR18 is priced at $1,659, while the VKR20 is available for $1,995.

The former comes with either a 16-, 20- or 26-inch barrel while the latter sports a 25-inch barrel. Users can also choose between standard and long-rail configurations. The synthetic stock resists rough handling, and users can adjust the length of pull via spacers.
