Skillset Tracks The Origins of Rockets And Space Exploration

The Skillset team sets off on a journey to New Mexico to explore the history of rocket development and the space race, along with its impact on American culture.

Space exploration, rocket propulsion, and the idea of visiting the moon are topics that likely filled your childhood with wonder. Whether through school or television, thoughts of space travel occupied our minds as we grew up. We pondered what strange life might share the universe with us, whether we could colonize Mars, and whether potential extraterrestrial beings were dangerous or peaceful.

The Birthplace of Modern Rockets

Before we could answer any of those questions, one crucial aspect had to be addressed: how are we going to get there? The simple answer? Rockets.

The story of rocketry is one that spans centuries and cultures, weaving a narrative filled with ambition, creativity, and scientific exploration. The origins of rocketry can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where the principles of propulsion began to take shape.

The earliest recorded use of rockets dates back to 13th century China, during the Song Dynasty. It was here that military inventors developed gunpowder-propelled devices for use in warfare.

The Trinity Project

Recently, the Skillset crew had the chance to explore some intriguing history tied to the space race right here in the New Mexico desert—a land cloaked in mystery and secrecy. How did German rocket scientists end up in this barren landscape, working side by side to help us beat the Russians to the moon? Why did we establish an extensive monkey training program, complete with monkey-sized space suits? It may sound like a plot from a science fiction story intended for Saturday morning television, but believe us—the truth is indeed stranger than fiction.

Today, rocketry stands as a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of exploration. From ancient Chinese fire arrows to cutting-edge space missions, the evolution of rocketry reflects our desire to reach beyond the stars. As we continue our journey into the cosmos, we honor the innovators of the past whose visions made it all possible.
