The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) released some fascinating data recently. It shows nearly 20 million modern sporting rifles in circulation in the United States. Any way you cut it, that's a helluva lot of Molon Labe.

And that's really the point driving the release of this data, isn't it? As a Biden White House looms, so too does an attempt America's most popular semi-automatic rifle, the AR-15. With it, an entire class of erroneously termed "assault rifles" will no doubt face unprecedented gun control efforts. So no better time to take stock of just what exactly that means for gun owners.

The data comes from ATF's Annual Firearms Manufacturing and Export Reports, combined with U.S. Internal Trade Commission data, according to NSSF. According to the data, 2018 saw 11.4 million firearms produced or imported into the U.S.; nearly one-half, 48 percent, comprised of modern sporting rifles.

Since 1990, modern sporting rifle numbers swelled to an estimated 19.8 million. American manufacturers produced 6 million firearms in 2019 alone. Of those, gun companies produced 2 million rifles. Another 3.3 million firearms were imported into the U.S. in 2019.

Here's where the numbers get truly massive. From 1991 to 2019, nearly 214 million firearms hit the U.S. market. Today, ATF research estimates 434 million firearms in U.S. civilian hands. Estimates suggest approximately 71 million pistol magazines holding more than 10 rounds. Meanwhile, experts believe another 79.2 million rifle mags holding more than 30 rounds in circulation.

Finally, we can't overstate the economic impact upon the United States. The industry maintains nearly 12,000 jobs. Meanwhile, it produces $3.9 billion in goods shipped, per 2018 data. Ammo companies produced an estimated 8.7 billion rounds of ammunition in 2018 alone.

“These figures, combined with the record-breaking 17.2 million NSSF-adjusted background checks for the sale or transfer of a firearm in the first ten months of 2020, demonstrates that Americans have a strong desire to continue purchasing firearms for lawful purposes,” said Joe Bartozzi, NSSF’s President and CEO. “The Modern Sporting Rifle continues to be the most popular rifle sold in America today, and with nearly 20 million in circulation, is clearly a commonly-owned firearm that is being used for lawful purposes every day in America. The continued popularity of handguns demonstrates a strong interest by Americans to protect themselves, their family and homes, as well as to participate in the recreational shooting sports.

A Biden White House will seek to undue it all. It will systematically ban America's most popular self-defense arms. It will tax gun owners into oblivion. Then it will fundamentally attack industry companies, enabling lawyers to murder gun companies with deaths of a thousand cuts. Then by using the ATF to reverse rulings in multiple product categories, it will attempt to make felons of us all.

During this incredible period of record, with guns surging like never before, violent crime declined by 51.3 percent.

Biden, who ran for president on an unabashedly anti-gun ticket, said in a message to families of Sandy Hook Elementary victims, “Every year, more than 30,000 people die from gun violence across America—a statistic we would associate with war in a far-off place. Countless more are left with a lifetime of injuries and trauma.”

He then proclaimed in the prepared statement, “You’ve helped us forge a consensus that gun violence is a national health crisis and we need to address its total cost to fully heal families, communities, and our nation, Eight years later, there have been plenty of thoughts and prayers, but we know that is not enough.”

While even one death of any innocent person at the hands of violent criminals is one too many, Biden’s longstanding practice of playing fast and loose with the facts where firearms are concerned is frustrating to those who know the real facts.

In fact, if you discount about 20,000 suicides a year, the total number of homicides is somewhere around 10,000, year in and year out. I’m certainly not saying suicides aren't important. However, they don’t fit into most people’s definition of “gun violence” as Biden portrays it.

There's also no doubt that 10,000 deaths is a significant number. However, it pales in comparison to a true "national health crisis" in the U.S.; one considered to be a major cause of death. According to several studies, medical errors by doctors and other healthcare practitioners account for up to 250,000 deaths every year. Do the math; you’ll see that your doctor is 25 times more likely to kill you than a bad guy with a gun. In fact, some studies suggest that medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., right behind heart disease and cancer.

Yet Biden and others continue to push for so-called “assault weapon” bans. They push for other useless gun restrictions that don’t affect criminals, only law-abiding gun owners. And they completely ignoring the Second Amendment in the process.

Do you know what other causes of death Biden hasn’t deemed to be a “national health crisis”? Here are CDC stats from 2018 on a few things that kill more people every year than guns in the hands of murderers:

Oh, and let's not forget about that thing called COVID-19. According to the CDC, the disease has claimed more than 300,000 lives in the U.S. this year, as of publishing time. THAT is a national health crisis — not guns.

That being the case, it’s not illogical to wonder why Biden, Kamala Harris and other anti-gun politicians continue to push for unconstitutional restrictions that further endanger lawful gun owners. More important, the restrictions have no effect on whether criminals can or cannot get guns to ply their nefarious trade.

Like nearly everything in government these days, the answer is likely power. Biden surely knows that if he can control the guns, he can more easily control the U.S. population. A portion of American citizens currently feel disenfranchised by the election results. Some consider the election rigged, producing fraudulent results. According to the data, 2018 saw 11.4 million firearms produced or imported into the U.S.; nearly one-half, 48 percent, comprised of modern sporting rifles.

Since 1990, modern sporting rifle numbers swelled to an estimated 19.8 million.

Meanwhile, unintentional firearm-related fatalities dropped by 68.2 percent.

A modern sporting rifle ban doesn't make you safer. It simply makes us weaker.

;
The man's own published platform outlines, in great detail, the most anti-gun presidential platform in American history. Yet over and over again, the Facebooks and Twitters and fact checkers and traditional mainstream news lie about what is about to transpire.

And of course we, the 2A community, know what's up. Conversely, the hardline anti-gun crowd will never cross the line, regardless of the reporting. But the tens of millions of folks in the middle, the ones that may not have much skin in this particular game either way, well they're being swayed. Every tag of "Missing Contest" or "False Information," even though it isn't, paints the 2A community with a negative brush. It makes this anti-gun agenda seem OK to the uninformed.

Most people simply never take the extra steps to investigate or read further. The digital disinformation age is real. It is upon us. And it's turning the tide in the war on guns.

President-elect Joe Biden climbed back upon his high horse Monday. He went after firearms, proclaiming guns and gun violence "a national health crisis."

The sooner Biden controls this group of dissidents, maybe then he moves on with the rest of his agenda—one that could reshape America into his liberal Utopian vision.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) released some fascinating data recently.
