Dallas Carjacker Foiled

Fox affiliate KRIV says it all started just after 10 p.m. on July 4 when Michelle Booker-Hicks stopped off for gas at a Shell station on Camp Wisdom Road. Booker-Hicks left her two and four-year-old sons in the SUV and went into the store to pay for the gas. When she glanced out the window, she saw a man suddenly jump into her vehicle and try to drive off.

Realizing what was happening, Booker-Hicks ran back to the SUV. She then got into the back seat with her sons and told the man to get out of the car. When he refused, she took action.

"He would not get out of the car," Booker-Hicks recalled. "He turned around and looked at me. I reached over the armrest to get [to] my glove compartment and that’s when I fired at him once I got the gun from my glove compartment."

Aftermath

CBS 11 says the man, later identified as Ricky Wright, crashed the SUV into a light pole upon being shot. Police arrived on the scene and Wright was eventually transported to a local hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the head. He is said to be in serious but stable condition.

"I should have just have emptied the whole clip but I didn't," Booker-Hicks said. "I just wanted to give him a warning shot that was it. I'm not a killer or anything like that, but I do believe in defending what's mine. I hope that woke him up."

Booker-Hicks also said she had just put the handgun in the glove box hours before the shooting after her husband gave her some ammunition.

"I told him that I needed some bullets for my gun and he told me that he was going to go get it," she stated.

Police questioned Booker-Hicks at the scene and then informed her she was free to go. Neither she nor her children were injured in the shooting or crash.

When Wright gets out of the hospital, he'll be facing two counts of unlawful restraint and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

"I wish I would’ve killed you, if I didn't already," Booker-Hicks said, when asked if she had a message for Wright.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXPpbU3JPe8[/embed]

A violent crime spree involving multiple carjackings and shootings ended when an armed citizen shot and killed the suspect at a Walmart parking lot in Washington over the weekend.

[in_content post="102975" alignment="align-left" /]

Suspect Carjacks Vehicle

A news release says the Walmart shooting incident began on Sunday at around 4:40 p.m. when Olympia police received word of an attempted carjacking at an area gas station. The suspect—44-year-old Tim Day—walked up to a family and tried to take their vehicle. When the family managed to evade Day, he fled the scene, driving the wrong day down Highway 101 and exiting into the city of Tumwater.

After driving erratically through the streets of Tumwater, Day crashed his car at an intersection. He then got out of his car and tried to carjack two other vehicles. During one of those incidents, he shot 16-year-old Danner Barton.

"There was a man, blond hair, standing in the middle of the road," Barton recalled to KIRO 7, adding that the man "told me stop. He had a gun in his hand. He ended up taking one shot at my front windshield and it nicked my thumb."

Luckily, Barton managed to escape.

"I ducked my head and I gunned it," he told CBS 19.

Day also fired shots at another vehicle, but the driver managed to escape.

Eventually, Day successfully carjacked a third vehicle, which he drove to a nearby Walmart.

Walmart Shooting

Day parked the car, walked into the Walmart and proceeded to the sporting goods section. Once there, he fired a shot at locked ammunition display case, grabbed some ammo and walked out of the store.

Two shoppers, both armed citizens, observed Day's actions and followed him as he exited the Walmart.

Once in the parking lot, Day tried to carjack another vehicle belonging to a man named Rick Fievez.

"So the shooter came up to my dad's side, the driver's side," said Fievez's son, Tyler. "Shot him twice. One in (the) shoulder, I think, one in the neck. So when he shot my dad, he looked at my mom and told my mom to get the 'F' out of the car."

Day then walked up to another car in the Walmart parking lot. When the driver backed away, one of the armed citizens raised his concealed carry gun and opened fire, shooting Day.

After the shooting, the armed citizen grabbed his first aid kit from his car and rendered first aid to Fievez, who was eventually airlifted to Harbourview Medical Center in critical condition. KIRO 7 reports that Fievez is paralyzed from the neck down.

Day was pronounced dead at the scene. According to the Seattle Times, he had an extensive criminal history, including violations of a domestic violence protection order, felony assault and making death threats. NW News Network said he's also been arrested for drug possession, unlawful possession of a firearm, and trafficking in stolen property.

The 47-year-old armed citizen who killed Day is being praised by witnesses as a hero. He wishes to remain unidentified. The only thing known about him is that he's a father, pastor, volunteer firefighter and medic.

"He is a hero," witness Brian Adams said, adding that the man "was carrying a concealed weapon, which is great and is totally legal ... He took action. I really think more people could have been shot... he saved us all."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sxzsz_xgNR8
;

What if he was in the truck with me at the time? What the heck would I have done? Thankfully I was alone, but it still happened. And it taught me some very good lessons and opened my eyes to a few things that need to change in my daily travels.

I have been a firearms instructor and huge advocate of personal protection for years and train regularly at the range. Likewise, I train others and teach personal awareness and security with my company Pew Pew Nation.

All this training, I believe, kept me calm and collected during this attempted carjacking. But it did expose a few weaknesses in my training. One thing that kept going through my head was how many 9mm rounds is it going to take to open up a hole in the windshield large enough to deliver rounds effectively on my target. I honestly don’t know.

I also started thinking about how loud this was about to be inside the closed cab of my truck. It occurred to me that during all my training, I have never fired a pistol inside a vehicle and have never shot through a windshield. That will all be changing now. I’m looking for training facilities that offer this type of training to better prepare myself in the event this happens a second time.

I also learned a few things about situational awareness. I always walk around very aware; some people even say I am paranoid at times. Clearly, that paranoia paid off because I knew something was going on before anything happened, thanks to being situationally aware.

With that being said, I made a big mistake while thinking I was doing the right thing. Pulling up behind the Toyota instead of picking another lane was not the best choice. I could have got in that far right lane with just a curb next to me and still kept my distance from them. That would have allowed me to hop the curb and get out of the situation instead of ending up a sitting duck when the traffic around us changed.

Those guys knew the area well and knew the timing of the lights. They waited for the perfect time to jump out and attempt their attack—when I was boxed in. They knew that the intersection behind us would catch up to us and block my exits.

I did call the police to report what happened. Mainly because I didn’t want anyone to report the driver of a silver F150 pulling a gun in traffic. I highly recommend reporting it yourself if you ever find yourself in a similar situation. I didn’t do anything wrong, so I had nothing to hide.

While talking to the dispatcher, I realized that all that adrenaline had blocked a whole lot of vital information out of my memory. I was pretty sure it was a gold-colored Toyota Camry, but not 100% sure now. Also, to this day, I still cannot come up with one number on their license plate, even though I know I looked at it.

I definitely will be investing in a good dash camera in the near future. A dash camera can act as incredible evidence and, in this situation, would have provided me and law enforcement with all the information and footage needed to find these guys and ensure they don’t attempt this stunt again.

I was embarrassingly useless to the police. I ended up not even filing a report because I couldn’t remember any vital information. Not to mention, I really didn’t have descriptions of the bad guys. The driver was an older white male with long hair, but I couldn’t see or remember anything else.

Also, the passenger wore a ski mask and gloves. No idea what he looked like and didn’t recall any features that would help identify him. That dash cam would have been really nice to have.

It took me a few days to really process what happened and why I was so rattled by this situation. I am thankful I didn’t have to pull the trigger and take a life. But I realized I was fully prepared to do so to save my own life. I discovered a few holes in my training that will be addressed in the very near future as well.

The biggest lesson during this situation was that this stuff can happen to anyone anywhere, at any time. With the state of this country right now and the world we live in, I believe it’s more important than ever to carry everywhere you go. Every single day of the week. Never let your guard down just because you might be going to a good neighborhood or just out for a minute.

Train often, know your firearm, and pay attention to your surroundings. It only takes a second to change life as we all know it. Stay safe and aware.
